How To Stop Your Cuticles From Peeling

12-29-18

Have you ever had that annoying hanging skin around your nails? “I absolutely love my hangnails,” said no one ever.

That super annoying and painful hanging skin shouldn’t be yanked on, ripped, bitten or picked at. Doing so can create more problems around your cuticles, like infections and create cuts.

But there is a correct way to deal with hangnails when they attack… it has nothing to do with biting or fiddling with them.  Here are a few tips on how to care for cuticles the right way. Plus, we answer the question: To cut or not to cut your cuticles.

Why Are My Cuticles Peelings?

Just like your body, your cuticles can get thirsty. Lack of hydration is the main culprit for hangnails and you could be using the wrong products to moisturize. Hand creams are not for cuticles as they evaporate before it can penetrate the cuticle area. Instead, use an oil-based product to penetrate the cuticle area.

Also clipping your cuticles will cause them to peel.

Should I Cut My Cuticles?

No. The cuticle is the layer of translucent skin that is shed from the underside of the the living skin that protects the nail plate from bacteria and pathogens from infecting the area. Cutting the cuticle, opens the risk to infections.

Push ‘Em Back With Care

It is recommended to push your cuticles back. When you push your cuticles back thoroughly, you won’t have think about cutting them.

To push cuticles back with care you should use a gentle wooden orange stick. You can even wrap the tip in cotton for extra cushion and push back lightly. There are a variety of cuticle pushers out there, such as plastic, wooden or metal options, and it depends on your preference on which to use.

The key here is to be gentle, since the cuticle plays an important role in protecting the nail. If not done incorrectly you can cause trauma (and even infection) to your nails if you’re too rough.
